What Is A Carbon Reduction Plan?

A carbon reduction plan which is often referred to as a carbon management strategy or carbon mitigation plan is a comprehensive framework designed to minimise the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHG)into the atmosphere. These plans outline specific measures and initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions across various sectors, including energy production, transportation, industry, and agriculture. 

Carbon emission reduction is vital for businesses not only in the UK but across the world. The worry of climate change has made both consumers and business owners alike adjust their lifestyles and work practices to try and reduce the impact. What should you include in a carbon reduction plan? 

We will work with you to create a bespoke plan however if you want a template plan to follow, this carbon reduction plan will include: 

• A commitment to net zero. 
• A baseline emissions report 
• A current emission report. 
• An emissions reduction target 
• Ways in which you are going to reduce emissions.  
• A declaration such as net zero by 20XX needs to be a sign-off by a company director etc 

Who needs to have a carbon reduction plan?

For the private sector, it is seen that it is good business practice to have a carbon reduction plan.  Any business that reports under SECR does not need to show its reduction plans however we recommend that they start to put one in place.   

If you are planning on working with the NHS there are different guidance.   

• From April 2023: For all new contracts above £5 million per annum, the NHS requires suppliers to publish a Carbon Reduction Plan for their UK Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a subset of Scope 3 emissions as a minimum (aligning with PPN 06/21). 
• From April 2024: The NHS has proportionately extended the Carbon Reduction Plan requirements to cover all new procurements.
