What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting is a pivotal practice empowering individuals and businesses to combat their carbon footprint. It involves acquiring offsetting credits equivalent to a specified volume of CO2 removal. Diverse methods exist for carbon offsetting, commonly through tree planting initiatives or investing in projects aimed at carbon removal.

There are two types of carbon credits: voluntary emissions reduction (VER) and certified emission reduction (CER). VERs are exchanged in voluntary markets with no third-party oversight, and CERs have regulated investment vehicles offered through institutional carbon funds, with the primary purpose of offsetting a specific project’s emissions, for example, a new power plant.

A carbon offset is essentially what happens to that carbon credit once it is purchased—a company balances or draws down a stated carbon credit inventory against its own carbon emissions.

The voluntary carbon market enables private investors, governments, non-governmental organisations, and businesses to voluntarily purchase carbon offsets to offset their emissions.

How to offset your carbon footprint?

Carbon Offsetting or the purchase or Carbon Credits, are from many businesses like Carbon Neutral Group.  The credits are purchased from Organisations who have got the correct accreditations, such as Gold Standard, United Nations and Verra.

We primarily utilise the United Nations carbon offset platform, renowned globally for its credibility, to facilitate the acquisition of offsetting credits starting at an affordable £7.00 per tonne. Additionally, our innovative "50p a tree" programme offers a direct avenue for carbon offsetting, with every contribution supporting the cultivation of fruit trees in Africa. This initiative not only helps neutralise carbon emissions but also fosters job opportunities, promotes gender equality through increased female employment, bolsters food security, and delivers numerous other socio-economic advantages.

Carbon Offsetting - What Options are available?

Tree plantation

Tree plantation projects restore forests, create habitats for biodiversity, and make a positive social impact around the world. CNG has a network of partners to help you achieve your tree plantation goals.

Infrastructure Projects

Green power is the future and CNG is a key part of driving this agenda. Funding green infrastructure projects, such as hydro dams and wind turbines, can help the long-term goals of emerging economies.

Restoring and preserving Scottish Peatlands

Scotland’s peat soils cover more than 20% of the country and store around 1600 million tonnes of carbon.

Unfortunately it is estimated that over 80% of the peatlands are degraded. Degraded peatlands may emit more CO2 than they remove and become a net source of greenhouse gases

The Scottish Government's climate change plan 2018-2032 update aims to restore at least 250,000 hectares of degraded peatland by 2030.
