Restoring and preserving Scottish Peatlands
Scotland’s peat soils cover more than 20% of the country and store around 1600 million tonnes of carbon.
Unfortunately it is estimated that over 80% of the peatlands are degraded. Degraded peatlands may emit more CO2 than they remove and become a net source of greenhouse gases
The Scottish Government's climate change plan 2018-2032 update aims to restore at least 250,000 hectares of degraded peatland by 2030.
